The Copenhagen Conference has an unexpected turn since yesterday evening, as Guardian published the secret draft agreement prepared by the Danish government and few “selected” (read rich) countries. The document says global emissions should peak by the end of next decade but does not include any emissions targets for 2020 or specific proposals for the creation of a green fund to help the most vulnerable. Control of climate change finance would be passed to the World Bank.
The scandalous document, which the Danish government still claims does not exist (even though it is now clear that “the emperor isn’t wearing anything at all”, made the developing nations very angry.
This afternoon, Tuvalu (a low-lying island near Fiji, already suffering from the rising sea level) called for the suspension of the Cop15 climate change conference in protest.
