Opening of COP15 from 12-07-2009

“Let’s get it done! This is the time to deliver! THIS is the place to commit. And yes there are still many obstacles. But it is up to us to overcome them. And it is do-able." With these words Connie Hedegaard's, Minister for the United Nation’s Climate Change, opened the COP15 in Copenhagen.

Kumi Naidoo, chair of TckTckTck.org and Executive Director of Greenpeace delivered a petition of 10 million signatures to the Prime Minister of Denmark at the opening of the Summit.

Little further away from the Bella Centre, where the official part of the conference is taking part, at the Klimaforum there was another opening, this time with a different tone. Naomi Klein world-famous environmentalist journalist said that “The Bella Center is the biggest case of disaster capitalism. The deal we really need is not even on the table” She made it clear that “Klimaforum is not about giving charity to the developing world its about taking responsibility and the industrialized countries cleaning up our own mess.”

Other information:

The famous “Fossil of the Day” award, traditionally awarded by CAN Int. was given to ALL industrialized countries – for an overwhelming lack of ambition, as Annex 1 countries seem to be in a race to the bottom as the rest of the world looks on in horror. The second place was awarded to Austria, Finland and Sweden for attempting to cook the books and reap unfair gains because of their large existing forests. The third place was awarded to Canada and Saudi Arabia got honorable mention.

At the Copenhagen airport Greenpeace posted posters with world leaders sending message from 2020 that “they are sorry they didn’t stop catastrophic climate change”. (Russian president Medvedev on this photo.)

EU does not reveal whether the Union will offer the 30 percent reduction. Looks like the suspense will go on until the endgame of the Copenhagen summit. It will all depend whether other nations’ pledges are going to be “comparable”. The word is that the European Union is prepared to put money on the table (1,3 billion Euro) during the ongoing UN climate summit in Copenhagen as a sign of good faith. The sum will be earmarked for climate change mitigation and adaptation in vulnerable third world countries during the next three years.
